Colophon — Edition 05
Colophon
How this site is made, and what it was before.
- Typography
- Instrument Serif for display, Instrument Sans for text, JetBrains Mono for the small print. Served through next/font, subset to Latin, swapped in after first paint.
- Stack
- Next.js 15 (App Router) with React 19, Tailwind CSS 4 for the token system, GSAP and Lenis for motion, Velite for typed MDX content, Vercel for hosting. Package management with pnpm. No CMS; every case study is a file in the repository.
- Rendering
- Every route is statically rendered at build time, including the Open Graph cards, the sitemap, robots.txt and llms.txt. Plates are captured from the live sites and served as WebP through the Next image pipeline.
- Motion
- Everything renders finished on the server. A script that runs before first paint arms the reveal states; each element then rises when it enters the viewport. Under prefers-reduced-motion nothing moves and the smooth scroll is never started.
- Themes
- Paper by day, Slate by night, following the system unless you choose otherwise. The switch is in the header. There is a third.
- Accessibility
- Semantic landmarks, a skip link, visible focus rings, tabular numerals, contrast held above AA in every theme. Games in the Lab run in sandboxed frames with their own controls.
